Also known as Indian Almond Catappa leaves, these leaves are essential for any aquarium!
Leaf size is approximately 2" but keep in mind these are natural leaves from a tree so size and shape may vary. These mini leaves are my favorite! They look so much cooler and more natural than the large leaves, especially in nano tanks. They also sink faster I've noticed. They are absolutely perfect for leaf litter tanks.
Catappa leaves release tannins, calcium, and humic acid. These properties are known for having antibacterial, antifungal, and stress-reducing properties, and have been shown to support the breeding and growth of shrimp colonies, as well as other invertebrates and shy fish. Adding these leaves to your aquarium gives fry and other bottom-dwellers like pygmy corydoras places to hide. As the leaves soak, microorganisms break down the leaf while reproducing and forming a layer of biofilm and infusoria. This microfauna is an ideal food source for small fry and shrimp because it is often the only thing tiny enough for them to consume in early life.
You can dose with 1 leaf per gallon for minimum benefits. I definitely am a maximalist and I've dumped 50 leaves into my 10 gallon betta tank with no problems. It makes such a dreamy dark water tank.
If you don’t like the way the leaves look in your tank, you can make a "tea" by boiling one leaf for every 0.5 gallon of water. Once the liquid has cooled, pour a little into the tank until you reach the color you want.
